FLOPAM AN 945 VHM Equivalent — Ultra High MW Anionic PAM

The VHM suffix is the top of the FLOPAM molecular weight ladder, and SNF publishes AN 945 VHM and AN 956 VHM as high charge density grades at ultra high molecular weight. That combination — high charge together with the longest chains in the range — is the hardest part of the anionic spectrum to match, because most suppliers trade one property off against the other. Our closest grade sits at very high charge density and very high molecular weight on our own scale. If your bags read a standard or SH suffix rather than VHM, the [AN 945 equivalent](/products/brand-equivalents/flopam-an-945-equivalent) page is the correct starting point instead.

Dosage Guide

Make up ultra high molecular weight anionic polymer at 0.05 to 0.1 percent rather than the 0.25 to 0.5 percent common for lower molecular weight grades, because solution viscosity climbs steeply with chain length. Allow full ageing before dosing and establish demand by settling test on the target slurry.

Frequently Asked Questions — FLOPAM AN 945 VHM Equivalent — Ultra High MW Anionic PAM

What does the VHM suffix actually mean?

It is the highest molecular weight tier SNF publishes in the FLOPAM AN range, above SH and HD. Charge density is carried by the digits in the number and stays in the same band across suffixes, so AN 945 and AN 945 VHM share a charge band and differ in chain length. Since chain length is what drives settling rate, the suffix is the more important half of the grade name.

Why is high charge plus ultra high molecular weight hard to supply?

The two properties pull against each other in manufacture. Raising the degree of hydrolysis to lift charge tends to work against building the longest chains, so a lot of ranges have a high charge grade and a high molecular weight grade but nothing convincing at both. That is the corner of the spectrum the VHM grades occupy, and it is where a substitution most often fails on a like-for-like number match.

Will ultra high molecular weight polymer survive my pumps?

Very long chains are more shear sensitive, and mechanical degradation at the dosing pump, in a long delivery line or through a centrifugal transfer can cost you the settling rate you paid for. Dose as far downstream as the mixing allows, use a low-shear progressing cavity or diaphragm pump for the neat solution, and make up at 0.05 to 0.1 percent so the solution is not so viscous that it needs aggressive pumping.

Should I be on this page or the standard AN 945 page?

Read the suffix on your bags. VHM belongs here. Standard, HD or SH belong on the [AN 945 equivalent](/products/brand-equivalents/flopam-an-945-equivalent) page. If the purchase order shows only a number with no suffix, ask your current supplier to confirm before either of us selects a grade — the number alone does not identify the polymer.

Is your grade a licensed copy of AN 945 VHM?

No. It is an independently manufactured anionic polyacrylamide positioned against the published AN 945 VHM profile. Descriptors follow different in-house scales, so we show each side on its own scale and ask you to confirm by settling test on your own slurry before changing supply.
