Dyeing Wastewater Treatment

Textile dyeing generates highly colored wastewater with suspended dyes, pigments, and fibers. Cationic PAM flocculates these contaminants, achieving 90%+ color removal and enabling water reuse or safe discharge. Typical dosage: 5-15 mg/L.

Printing Paste Thickener

PAM serves as a thickener in textile printing pastes, improving paste viscosity and reducing bleeding during printing. It also acts as a binder, improving color fastness and wash durability of printed fabrics.

Textile Sizing Agent

Anionic PAM is used as a sizing agent on warp yarns to improve strength, reduce breakage during weaving, and enhance fabric hand feel. It washes out easily during desizing without leaving residue.

Sludge Dewatering

After primary treatment, textile mill sludge is dewatered using cationic PAM on belt presses or centrifuges. High-charge-density CPAM achieves 75-80% moisture reduction, cutting disposal costs significantly.

Which PAM removes colour from dyeing wastewater?

High-charge-density cationic PAM, generally 40-60% CD, at a representative 5-15 mg/L. Dye molecules and pigment particles in textile effluent carry a net negative charge, so the removal comes mainly from charge neutralisation rather than bridging — which is why charge density matters more here than molecular weight. Colour removal above 90% is achievable on most reactive and disperse dye effluent when the polymer is paired with a coagulant.

Does PAM work on reactive dyes and dissolved colour?

Partly. PAM flocculates suspended and colloidal dye, but hydrolysed reactive dye that is fully dissolved will not settle on polymer alone. Those streams normally need a coagulant such as PAC or alum, or a decolourising agent, ahead of the PAM to convert dissolved colour into a floc the polymer can capture. Judge this from a jar test on the actual effluent rather than from the dye class on the recipe sheet.

What PAM is used for warp sizing and printing paste?

Anionic PAM in both cases, at different molecular weights. Sizing uses 5-8 million Da at a representative 1-3 kg per ton of yarn to raise warp strength and cut loom breakage, and it desizes out without residue. Printing paste uses 8-12 million Da at 2-5 kg per ton of paste as a thickener and binder, which controls viscosity to limit bleeding and helps wash fastness on the printed fabric.

Why does dosage change between batches on the same line?

Textile effluent composition swings with the dye recipe. Salt load from reactive dyeing, residual alkali from scouring, surfactants and levelling agents, and temperature all affect how much charge the polymer loses before it reaches the dye particles. A line running dark shades one shift and pastels the next can need a different dose at the same flow. Mills that dose against a jar test or streaming-current measurement rather than a fixed setpoint use noticeably less polymer.

What information is needed to quote PAM for a textile mill?

Send the application (dyeing effluent, sizing, printing paste, or sludge dewatering), dye classes in use, effluent pH and TSS, colour level or target discharge limit, dewatering equipment type, estimated monthly volume, destination port, and required documents.
